Osteopathy for Children
Babies & Children may suffer stresses & strains in their
bodies due to the birth process. In order to reduce the size of
the head the soft bones of the baby’s head overlap as it
squeezes through the bony pelvis. Many babies are born with odd
shaped heads as a result of this. Usually this corrects itself
but occasionally, especially if the birth has been difficult, the
moulding is retained & can result in compression & discomfort.
What effect does retained moulding have?
Crying & Irritable: The baby may have a
constant feeling of pressure in the head.
Feeding Problems: Difficulty in sucking as the
nerves to the tongue may be irritated.
Sickness, Colic & Wind: The nerve to the
stomach may be irritated and/or tension in the diaphragm compromising
digestion.
Sleep Disturbances: Tension in the bony & membranous
casing of the skull may over stimulate the baby’s nervous
system. The effects of retained moulding & compression can
lead to other problems as the child grows, such as recurrent ear
infections & behavioural problems.
OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT
Cranial Osteopathy is very gently, safe and effective in the treatment
of babies & children. Specific gentle pressure is applied where
necessary to release the compression.
REACTIONS TO TREATMENT
Reactions are variable: some are very relaxed afterward & sleep
well, others have a burst of energy, usually followed by a good
nights sleep. Occasionally children are unsettled after treatment,
this is often when the release of the retained moulding is incomplete & further
treatment is needed.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL BE NEEDED
On average 2 to 6 treatments are sufficient. This will vary according
to the severity of the problem & the age of the child.
WHEN TO TREAT
The younger the better, it is never too early. For best results,
treatment should be before the age of 5 years. |
